James Buford Tune Professional Resume


Mr. Tune is a retired Police Tactical Officer with the Metro Nashville Police Department. He served in the Special Operations Division, Tactical Unit, Bomb Squad, Interstate Traffic Enforcement and Underwater Search & Recovery Team. Mr. Tune also had special assignments in the Sex Assault Division, Robbery & Burglary Division, Investigator to District Attorney’s Office on D.U.I. Prosecution. He was assigned to numerous multi agency units with the Tennessee Highway Patrol, FBI, ATF and U.S. Secret Service. Mr. Tune was also an instructor with the Metro Police & State Police Training Academy for specialized programs.               

He has served as chief executive and master trainer for the Academy of Personal Protection & Security (A.P.P.S.) for the past 15+ years.  A.P.P.S. offers basic and instructor certifications in a myriad of security and law enforcement topics and has trained numerous federal, state and local law enforcement agencies.  Mr. Tune is considered to be an expert witness and has testified regarding proper self defense, use of force, firearms, law enforcement and security procedures. He is certified by the Tennessee Department of Commerce and Insurance as an Instructor for Unarmed & Armed security officers, Defensive Sprays, Firearms, Use of Force, Electronic Control Devices, Handcuffs/Restraints, Excited Delirium/Sudden In Custody Death and Batons. He is also certified by the Tennessee Department of Safety to teach the Tennessee Handgun Permit programs.

Mr. Tune is a member of the National Law Enforcement Trainers Association (NLETA), International Law Enforcement Educators and Trainers Association, Tennessee Law Enforcement Training Officers Association and the International Association of Law Enforcement Firearms Instructors and the Tennessee Firearms Association to name just a few. He is also the author of Training Manuals on Street Survival and Self Defense, Defensive Sprays, Batons and Handgun Defense and has written numerous articles for law enforcement and security publications. He was appointed by the Governor as an Advisory Board Member for the Tennessee Department of Commerce & Insurance, Private Protective Services and served from 1995 to 2007.  Mr. Tune is the recipient of the Exemplary Service Award, Distinguished Service Award and Police Officer of the Year from the Metro Nashville Police Department. He is now a member of the Nashville Tennessee Mayors 911 Board for the Emergency Communication.
